  • Isolation is from throat cultures and other specimens
  • The growth of viridans streptococci, other beta-hemolytic and nonhemolytic streptococci, most enterobacteriaceae, neisseria species and some pseudomonas species is inhibited
  • To aid in the detection of group a and b streptococci, chemicals (such as crystal violet and sodium azide) and antimicrobial agents (such as neomycin and gentamicin) have been incorporated into sheep blood agar
